Exeter will fall silent this Sunday as the city remembers service personnel killed during wars and conflicts, with a special service at the War Memorial in Northernhay Gardens.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the 85th Anniversary of the Battle of Britian.
To commemorate this occasion, the City War Memorial has been adorned with panels of poppies.
The panels were originally created to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War and were first displayed at Exeter Cathedral in 2017. They were subsequently used in 2023 to grace the City War Memorial on the 100th anniversary of its unveiling, continuing their role in remembering and honouring those who served.
This year also marks the 375th Anniversary of the formation of the Coldstream Guards
Military contingents will arrive at the War Memorial from 10am on Sunday, with the Lord Mayor, Cllr Anne Jobson, and other civic dignitaries, arriving at 10.50am.
At 10.59am, the Exhortation will be led by the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Devon, followed by the ‘Last Post’ by buglers from the Salamanca Band of the Rifles.
There will be a two minute’s silence at 11am followed by ‘Reveille’.
This will be followed by the Kohima Epitaph delivered by the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Devon, and the laying of wreaths by dignitaries and military representatives.
Everyone is welcome to attend and those who do are encouraged to find an Order of Service online at https://new.express.adobe.com/webpage/ip5aYTqwSBvh4? although there will be a limited number of paper versions on the day.
The County Service will take place inside Exeter Cathedral and will start at 4pm.
